What alternatives to the standard sofa are out there?

On Cloud Nine with this sofa

Earlier this year a designer came up with a stunning concept: the floating sofa. Here’s the science behind this remarkable idea...

“Cloud is a sofa concept designed for ultra comfort and relaxation. The soft floating upper part is supported by the magnetic force generated by the bottom base. No matter if you want to work and sit with comfort or simply a power nap to release the stress, you can always enjoy your time to relax on the floating cloud.”

Sadly the Cloud ‘magnetic floating sofa’ is destined to remain a concept. The man behind it only entered a relaxation design contest. There are no plans to start mass producing thousands of what could be a magnificent sofa, probably because the experience would give buyers yet another reason to call work on a wet Monday morning complaining of a cold. In short, this sofa would encourage shirking on a grand scale.

All of which leads to a bigger question: if the magnetic floating sofa will never leave the drawing board, what other alternatives are out there? Here are some suggestions from other designers.

The Massaging Pleasure Pillars Sofa

At first glance this looks like a giant upside down scrubbing brush. The sofa features a flat platform-like support instead of legs. Where you sit is covered with soft mini-pillars. You just jump on and adjust yourself to fit amongst what are described as ‘pleasure pillars’. It’s a great idea so long as you relax amongst the bristles. Try anything else, watching TV for example, and you might start to struggle.

The bike seat sofa

A Japanese bicycle company came up with this unusual concept. It looks like someone took twenty bike seats and welded them to a steel frame. Everyone knows bike seats are uncomfortable and that sitting on one for too long can be quite painful. Intriguing but impractical.

The Yang sofa

Think of a four-piece jigsaw puzzle which you sit on and you’ve got the Yang sofa. You can create unusual puzzles by using a mixture of up to four left or right arm sofas. It can be interlocked to form a sofa or a sectional. You’ll never be bored with furniture again. What a great idea.

So that was just a quick selection of some of the more unusual sofa concepts and ideas around at the moment. We all have our personal choices and most of these probably won’t work for the majority of people. However, the four items highlighted here suggest there is more to the world of sofas once we let our imaginations run wild.
